"Not this President."

For the first time, last night, I was glad that John Kerry is the Presidential nominee and John Edwards is the Vice Presidential nominee, not vice versa. Edwards might have been able to say it better - it's not what you say but how you say it - yet I don't think he'd have looked or sounded as Presidential doing it. That was Kerry's advantage all along, and I grudgingly admit that was clear last night. While I think I was ready to fall asleep about an hour into it. Oh no, not ANOTHER question about Iraq. The consensus seems to be that Bush did a lousy job, even if Kerry didn't score any knock out punches. I thought the best part was how Bush repeated some of Kerry's harshest lines for him, allowing them to hang out there, while Kerry never had to mention them himself. I would bet Rove's first step after the debate was to destroy Bush's walkman and headphones - on which he listened to Kerry speeches to prepare for Thursday night - then issue a memo to keep Bush as far from footage of Kerry as possible. "Just because they sound silly to you, Mr. President, does not mean you should keep repeating them on live television in a debate!" It would seem that Kerry's approach, actually studying the facts and speaking with authority, was the most effective. As John Edwards said this morning, last night's debate showed very clearly that the "facts are on our side." Not a bad position to be in.
