How do gas pumps get so slow?

I was at the gas station today, and it took two seconds per tenth of a gallon to fill it up. For fifteen gallons, it took five minutes standing there squeezing the handle. (Like most states, NY banned automatic-on handles due to the fire risk.)

The lady next to me had the same long wait, but she also had the explanation.

When the stations haven't cleaned their filters they get clogged up and the gas literally can't get through the filter any faster than a trickle. So in other words, if this happens to you more than once, go find a station that cleans their filters.
