Is the T in GLBT short for "Too controversial"?
From the 2004 Democratic party platform:
We will 29enact the bipartisan legislation barring workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation. We 30
are committed to equal treatment of all service members and believe all patriotic Americans 31
should be allowed to serve our country without discrimination, persecution, or violence. We 32
support the appointment of judges who will uphold our laws and constitutional rights, not their 33
own narrow agendas. 34
Either it was overlooked, or it was considered too much of a risk, but once again, gender identity and expression have been excluded from the Democratic party's platform plank on workplace discrimination. I realize most people's views of the transgender are formed by watching Jerry Springer, but because I have a close friend who is transgendered and see her discriminated against regularly, I can tell you this is an important issue for those affected by it, and it ought to be addressed.
The transgender community is the one group of people left who many small businesses or even government agencies don't think twice about discriminating against. My friend is passable as a woman, but when her secret gets out or she reveals her status, she is almost always fired or refused the job - on the spot. This has a huge impact on transgendered people and affects basic human rights.
150 members of Congress have signed a Diversity Statement from GenderPAC and the Human Rights Campaign, affirming that they do not discriminate in their own hiring based on employees' sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. It's a start, but the party is still trailing corporate America on this issue. Major companies are realizing discrimination is just not profitable:
