Speak Out about the Future

The DNC has a contest for a young person to speak at the convention. I read through the rest, and I think this is the best essay of the ten. If you agree, go vote for it!

Reality Check
Don't change the channel.

It's no surprise that my demographic, 18-to-24 year olds, prefers reality television to reality. We're more motivated to vote for a primetime singer than for a President, and we seek notoriety over the news. We look to these contemporary idols as examples of how we want to be. These shows offer a promise of ourselves, only better.

In reality, the youth of America applies for job after job, hoping that this next is the one that comes through. We work without health insurance, hoping that we won't get sick. And we go to war, hoping against hope that we'll be coming home again, soon.

It is time to change – not the channel – but our lives. In the real Real World, young people want more. We are motivated to live our lives with strength, purpose, and determination, but we need help to do it. We need politics to fully realize our potential.

Guess what? Politics is the longest-running reality show around. And this should sound familiar: we get to vote the characters off, if we don't like what they do.

Young people need and deserve to have a voice in the present and future of our country. The decisions being made about our lives are too important to let someone else direct them. As young people we need to ask for more. If ours is the Information Age, then let's get informed. Let's register our votes, along with our websites. And instead of requesting the newest video, let's request a new President, President John Kerry.

Through politics we can change our country to reflect ourselves, only better. We can be the stars in a new series. Together, we can create a new American reality.

Change the future.
