Bowling for Columbine was better
Fahrenheit 9/11 was soldout, even out here in upstate New York. People were getting turned away by the dozens well before show time. I think the box office numbers will be very impressive. I had to buy a ticket to The Notebook, then sneak in to see 9/11, instead. Here is a hint to those who have not tried this before. When they say a film is sold out, there are still at least twenty seats left. They never sell every seat before declaring a movie sold out. At least not at any theater I've switched tickets at. Granted if everyone tried to switch, people like me would not be able to find a seat, but hey, I'm not taking the seat of anyone who got there before me, and if I thought I was, I wouldn't sit down.
Anyway, I can not see how this movie got an R rating. That has to be political. They did not show anything I had not already seen in US News & World Report. I recommend Fahrenheit 9/11. It's worth seeing. But I think the problem for me was that I was too familiar with the subject matter, so not a lot in Fahrenheit 9/11 suprised me or caught me off guard. Columbine made me feel like I had learned something. Fahrenheit was more of a bore. Maybe it was the way Moore narrated instead of participating. Several times I could see the flaw in his logic, but heard the rest of the audience buying it hook line and sinker. You know, the times you hear other people get all indignant, and you're like: What?
There's plenty to get pissed about, and no need to rely on misleading footage. For instance, the rude lady thought Mrs. Lipscomb was part of the ambiguously defined protest. The rude lady was shameless, but she was not attacking the troops like Moore made it sound. If you see the movie you'll know the scene I'm talking about. And five minutes of a mother's grief followed by a clip from a Bush press conference is powerful, but tacky. You automatically feel like Moore is going too far, even if you see his point. Sometimes you need a flyswatter, instead of a hammer. One thing I was glad to see was that the beheading that they show is from the distance and it's of an ordered execution in Saudi Arabia, not a casualty of war in Iraq. I've never seen someone get there head chopped off all up close and personal, and I won't be sad if I never do. Some other points were spoiled for me when I heard about them in the running commentary all this week, but before this week I did not know, or remember that:
Bush waited in the classroom seven minutes after the SECOND plane hit.
Bandar Bush is a regular at the White House, but not many NATO allies are.
Two dozen Bin Ladens were flown out of the country at Prince Bandar's request.
There were undercover agents planted in harmless peace movement groups.
Saudi royals funnel about 1.4 billion a year into the Bush family's companies.
Bush was firm with Richard Clarke about tying 9/11 to Saddam from day one.
Anyway, if you go to see this you will also get to see some great clips of Bush looking and sounding like the jackass he is, and Moore saves the best for last, even if Moore's message really does gets muddled and confused along the way.
