Will the last Deaniac out turn off the lights?
I remember several years ago on one of those "Funniest commercials" TV specials, there was a great animated commercial from Russia. It was a public service message asking people to conserve energy, probably because the state run utilities were going broke. Anyways, it went like this:
A young father is finishing packing his things and determinedly headed for the door. Some somber music is playing.
His children huddle behind his young wife, as she pleads for forgiveness and begs him to stay, wringing her hands.
He slams the door and you hear him start to walk away, but then his footsteps stop. There is a pause. The door opens, and the young wife's face lights up.
Has he changed his mind? Is he going to stay?
The husband leans into the room just far enough to reach the light switch, turns out the lights, then shuts the door and leaves.
The message on the now dark screen?
"When you leave, please turn off the lights."
For some reason that commercial came to mind today when I was considering the blogger exodus from the Dean for America campaign. It used to be that I could not find bloggers who linked to anybody but Dean. Now I can hardly find any who do. Oliver Willis and Jay Marvin, both of whom I always wondered why they chose Dean over Edwards, are now officially off the Dean bandwagon. Jay's wife Mary pulled the Dean bumpersticker off their car yesterday. Oliver took the Dean banner off his site last week. Even Rick Klau, who built the Blog for America, is having some doubts:
Irrational exuberanceIf you’re looking for some good coverage of Trippi’s resignation, the campaign’s focus (or lack thereof) and what this means moving forward, be sure to read Noam Scheiber’s mea culpa at TNR last night.
Bottom line: the clock is ticking. Roy Neel has his work cut out for him.
Clearly, Joe Trippi's unceremonious exit has only cemented the idea that the game is over, just like Dean's "I Have a Scream" speech cemented his public image.

I thought Dean did a great job on Meet the Press yesterday — much more relaxed than he was in June, much more in command of the issues (and willing to tell Russert when he was off-base). I still see... [Read More]
