Will Clark's luck run out?

A pattern is emerging, and it is just not sustainable for Wesley Clark. He camps out for two weeks in New Hampshire and barely edges out John Edwards for third, while at the same time Edwards comes very close to winning in Iowa. Then Clark camps out for a week in Oklahoma and barely edges out Edwards again just to keep himself in the race. In the meantime, Edwards also wins 45% to 30% in South Carolina over Kerry and shows a strong second in Missouri. Of course, if you listen to the Clark campaign you might not even know that Edwards is in the race:

Wes Clark solidified his status as a top tier contender for the Democratic nomination by winning the Oklahoma primary and finishing second in Arizona, New Mexico and North Dakota. He landed more first- and second-place finishes than any other candidate beside John Kerry. Before departing to campaign in Tennessee, Clark told a cheering crowd of supporters, "I leave Oklahoma even more full of hope and even more committed to building an even better America."

More first and second place finishes than anyone but John Kerry? Really?

What he neglects to mention is that he means "of the seven states holding primaries on February 3rd."

Even then, John Edwards was obviously a VERY close second in Oklahoma. He had a solid second in Missouri, and he was 26 votes shy of second in Delaware.

If Edwards had 27 more votes in Delaware, and 1,250 more in Oklahoma, Edwards would have had two firsts and four seconds overall, including Iowa. Clark would have had four second place finishes to his name. Period. There would have been a great deal of pressure on Clark to drop out. Now Clark is still in it, and camping out in Tennessee. Hoping that a full concentration of resources there will eke out a third narrow victory over Edwards. Clearly, Edwards and Clark are going after the same voters. Will Clark luck out again, or will Edwards finally be able to differentiate himself from the General, and bring Clark's campaign to a grinding halt deep in the back waters of Tennessee?
