Quote of the year
Okay, the year is only three days old, but this one gave me some pause alright:
“It’s true that systems would always be compromised,” he said. “The point is, you want to know about it.... If you can detect when those things happen, that’s what’s vitally important. Any ballots that get compromised will get detected, and that’s what’s crucial.”
Well, no shit that's crucial, Sherlock, but aren't the same security measures that protect the ballots the ones protecting the system logs? If your systems could always be compromised, what makes you so sure your logging is bulletproof?
Suggestion. Buy a fucking mainframe. You don't trust the nations elections to freaking networked desktop computers! That is why every major corporation uses mainframes to run it's mission critical software. It's the only secure way.
The whole mainframe architecture is built to keep authorized data safe. Of course, IBM is in no rush to get involved with something like Florida in 2000. Guess I can't blame them, but man, they could sure do a lot of good. Imagine a system where voters could actually figure out if they are registered to vote!
Anyway, here's some more of the article, if you aren't worried enough, yet:
BELLEVUE, Wash. - A company developing encryption-based software for secure electronic voting has itself become the victim of a computer break-in, the company’s top executive told MSNBC.com. Federal authorities have confirmed that the incident is under investigation.
The intrusion into Bellevue-based VoteHere’s corporate network occurred in October, said Jim Adler, VoteHere’s founder, president and chief executive officer. No suspects have yet been named, but Adler said his company, in cooperation with investigators, had developed substantial information about the source of the intrusion over the past two months.
Well, it's good to know that if there is tampering with the 2004 election, we will be notified in vague terms about it, well after Bush has safely been sworn in.
