Congressman Chaka Fattah Endorses Senator John Edwards

Fattah Will Serve as National Honorary Co-Chair of Edwards for President and Senior Advisor on Urban Policy

PHILADELPHIA, PA: Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), a national leader on education policy, today endorsed Senator John Edwards for president of the United States, citing his vision of better schools and a better opportunity for every child.

"George Bush's America is an America where half of our children have everything to look forward to and the other half little or nothing to look forward to. John Edwards' One America would provide a future for all," said Congressman Fattah. "John Edwards is absolutely correct that America's future -- both in terms of national security and economic prosperity -- hinders on closing the gap between the two Americas."

"John Edwards' vision of One America that gives every child the chance to succeed builds on a growing national consensus about what is possible," said Congressman Fattah, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. "And he has offered more than just his vision and his attention to issues that are too often forgotten-I see a President Edwards making a dynamic difference on the life chances of tens of millions of young people through his education agenda."

"Congressman Fattah has led the way for two million young people to go on to college. Working together, every student in our nation's schools will know that college is possible," said Senator Edwards.

Senator Edwards has been a strong proponent of Congressman Fattah's GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), proposing to double the funding for the initiative that helps middle school students in high-poverty areas stay on the path to college. Edwards has also worked with the Philadelphia congressman on various other education policies in the past.

"I want a President that will lead on education reform, a president that will make our schools better and our future more secure. John Edwards is my choice for President," said Congressman Fattah.

Fattah brings with him both political and policy strength to the campaign.
