Do or die time for candidates?

Good piece by Lisa from RuminateThis:

LET'S NOT BE READING CAMPAIGN EULOGIES JUST YET...

Dave Winer, tech-blog legend and BloggerCon's chief spinmeister, has decided it's time for him to move weblogs into the political arena. We're already there, but that's another story - one having to do with the disconnect between some Big Guns of Tech Weblogs, and that phenomenon known as poli-blogging. Winer says that Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) may disappear from the presidential race come next month. Seems a New York Times article has started the process of writing Edwards off: He's too youthful in appearance. He started his campaign too late. He has too little experience. Too, too, too. Not surprisingly, in these times of original reportage (NOT), the Gray Lady has company...

CNN tells us it's "do-or-die" time for Edwards. Hey, if he's not leading the pack by now - August 2003, they figure it's probably best to kiss those presidential aspirations goodbye.

Really? I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but the situation doesn't look so dire just yet...

First off, let me get one thing straight: I've not formed a solid allegiance to any one candidate. There's only one sure thing going on at my desk: I want a populist who can beat Bush. Kucinich? Dean? Someone Else? I'm not sure, and get this: I'm not alone.

Fact is, most Americans - the ones who live and breath an air devoid of 24/7 political rhetoric - really haven't a clue who is running, much less what their messages are. Sure, there's a sense that Something is Going On, but just try asking a couple of Average Joes and Josephines what they think of the ongoing Howard Dean-John Kerry tussle, and you'll find yourself smack right in the middle of Conversational 20 Questions. I've been there....

For months, I've been told by someone connected with the the Edwards campaign that their guy wasn't about to seriously kick things into gear until late summer/early fall. Summer is a dead time, they say. Folks are otherwise engaged and out of pocket politically. Yeah, I can buy that. Why waste money and energy on going nowhere? Especially when Bush's war chest - the one that Dem nominee will eventually be up against - is so massive? That's been their line since spring, and know what? It makes sense to me...
