It describes itself as "an independent, nonpartisan effort to encourage prayer for this and future administrations and key leaders of our nation." Sounds good so far, despite the fact that the thought apparently never occurred to them during the Clinton administration. However, when you visit the site, you start to realize they are not so nonpartisan after all. For one, their list of monthly American Inspiration Award winners seems awfully like a whos-whos of Christian conservative celebrities. It goes without saying that George W. Bush won the first yearly award for 2002. Condoleezza Rice received one of the group's monthly awards. Then consider these excerpts from Erika Harold's award page:
Though she almost quit the Miss America program, believing that officials would never elect a woman with views as conservative as hers, her persistence has paid off, not only in the pageant, but throughout her life. Now that Erika Harold is established as Miss America, she is actively representing her views on abstinence and anti-violence for young people....Erika's faith has played a large part in the development of her character. During a visit to Washington, D.C., in late October she was one of just a few individuals invited to a Bible study with U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft in his office. "He invited her back, any time," Erika's dad, Bob Harold said.
I thought those were some of the most glaringly political parts, but you really don't have to look any further than the front page, if you can read between the lines. Apparently the "nonpartisan" Presidential Prayer Team is not so fond of affirmative action:
Pray for the president as his administration implements policies resulting from the Supreme Court ruling on college admission standards. Pray for the president's expressed hope, that America will truly be a color-blind society, with fairness for individuals from every background.
Relishes the white supremist Wilson administration:
"The Bible...is the one supreme source of revelation of the meaning of life, the nature of God and spiritual nature and needs of men. It is the only guide of life which really leads the spirit in the way of peace and salvation. America was born a Christian nation. America was born to exemplify that devotion to the elements of righteousness which are derived from the revelations of Holy Scripture."
--Woodrow Wilson
Limits their "nonpartisan" list of key leaders to Bush cabinet members:
ADDITIONAL LEADERS TO PRAY FOR THIS WEEKNational Security Advisor
Condoleezza RiceSecretary of Agriculture
Ann VenemanSecretary of HUD
Mel MartinezEPA Administrator
Christine Whitman
And encourages the unconstitutional government promotion of Christianity:
When President and Mrs. Bush arrived, Mr. Bush welcomed the players, and Cal Ripkin, Jr., the honorary chair of White House Tee Ball. Then President Bush led the players in reciting the Little League pledge. His voice rang out clearly as the young boys and girls echoed his words:The Little League Pledge
"I trust in God.
I love my country and will respect its laws.
I will play fair and strive to win.
But win or lose I will always do my best."The Little League Pledge is yet another example of the foundation of faith that has under girded America. The pledge was established in 1955, shortly after "under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance. The pledge has been recited by millions of children and adults around the world through their participation in Little League. It is also the only children's sports organization that is chartered by Congress.
Their bold face added, not mine. Does that sound "nonpartisan" to you? Any bets whether or not the group would be praying for Al Gore? Enough said.

Since when has prayer been a partician factor?
I believe even George Washington prayed for the country and his guidance. I think this movement is to be congratulated for their work.

Dorothy, I agree that prayer should not be a partisan act. That is exactly why I am criticizing that web site! For trying to make prayer a partisan act.

Prayer is an essential part of life for any born-again Christian. Whoever dares try limiting prayer is going against what God wants and will face dire circumstances if they do not repent of that opinion. Also, I would like to know how I can personally contact the serviceman I have made a commitment to pray for

It makes me crazy as a Christian when I hear statements or emails exchanged by fellow Christians that comment on the fact that "Life, Liberty and our pursuit of happiness will not be endangered because someone says a 30 second prayer before a football game. "It's a Christian prayer ... well this is the United States of America, a country founded on Christian priniples. Christian churches outnumber all other better than 200-to-1! So many things are changing and being challenged in our Nation! Unfortunately, one or two will tell thousands what they can and cannot do. I don't think a short prayer at a football game is going to shake the world's foundations immediately! As a Christian, I am sick and tired of turning the other cheek while our courts strip us of all our rights! Our parents and grandparents taught us to pray before eating, to pray before we go to sleep. Our Bible tell us just to pray without ceasing. Now a handful of people and their lawyers are telling us to cease prayer in public schools, etc.!? I am so glad to be apart of the Presidential Prayer team ... we seem to be massive in size .. is there ANYTHING we can do to get America back to where it should be?

I am pleased to add my voice in the name of Jesus Christ, for our president and advisors. God says, "If my people will humble themselves and turn from their wicked ways and seek my face, then I will hear from heaven and heal their land". We need healing desperately.

I thought that this was supposed to be a country not led by any god much less a christian god, one for whom many have killed. So what if christians outnumber those who don't believe 200-1 that doesn't mean christian believers are correct. Using that idea would mean that in other country's other religions are correct. SO who's religion is right? Further, have you ever questioned why you belive, and what exactly you believe in? Have you ever questioned your ability to live up to the expectations set out by a christian god? Moreover, why would anyone really ascribe to a religion that says you can kill someone in cold blood and beg for forgiveness and go to heaven, and on the other hand, not believe and be the worlds greatest human being and go to hell? Just wondering. Anyway no it's not fair that kids have to recite the little league pledge or say the pledge of allegiance with god in it. For those of you that argue that, guess who started public displays of affection for a home country...Adolf Hitler!
