I'm a Believer
These days, Democratic hopefuls are trying to find their own groove. “It’s the most over-thought decision in a campaign,” explains Sen. John Edwards’ press secretary, Jennifer Palmieri. “Everyone thinks they’re an expert.” Members of Edwards’s team brought out their CD collections and started arguing over just the right tune to associate with their man. It had to project something about the candidate, but not seem immodest....Edwards himself liked John Mellencamp’s “Small Town.” “If John Edwards had sat down to pen a song about his upbringing and values, he would have written that song,” Palmieri says. But Mellencamp has been overused, it seems, so the song got relegated to what’s called “rope-line music”—the tunes played while a candidate shakes hands at the end of an event. Vince Gill’s “Next Big Thing” also had rope-line potential. But, again, it was too self-promoting to make the cut. Lately Edwards has been leaning toward “I’m A Believer”—the Smashmouth remix of the Monkees’s original. Not only does it tell you something about the candidate, but it’s got cross-generational appeal.
Here are the first thirty second of "I'm a Believer" by Smash Mouth for realplayer from the Shrek soundtrack at Amazon.
As you might guess, the song does nothing for me, but there you have it. Look for my soon to be released list of "rap theme songs" for the campaigns. Suggestions welcome.
